Wayan's Warung

Amed
Phone 08123 38291277

Amed is a surprise, an undiscovered treasure. Mountains on one side, ocean on the other, colouful Jukung (the local boats) line every shore line. They head out to sea very early in the morning to catch Barracuda and Tuna. We knew the area was very mountainous but nothing quite prepared us for the curving mountain roads with steep falls down to the ocean way, way below. If you are going to explore Amed make sure you have a good vehicle and driver, the scenery is totally amazing but the roads are a challenge for even the most experienced drivers.

We set off from Lovina early in the morning and followed the coast, passing through Singaraja, Telakula, Lupak and stopping long enough in Tulamben to explore the shipwrecked remains of the USS Liberty located approximately 20 meters off shore. By the time we arrived in Amed it was late afternoon and we were in need of a snack and a cold drink.

Wayans Warung is in a great location not far from the beach but high up on a hill so you get to enjoy the cool afternoon sea breezes as they drift by. It is a home-style Warung very casual but very clean and with good staff, fast service and most importantly good food. They will also deliver to your hotel or bring your meal to you while you lie on the beach and soak up the sunshine. Soups include fish lemon soup Rp15,000 chicken noodle Rp15,000 Soto ayam Rp13,000 and pumpkin Rp13,000. Sandwiches include chicken breast Rp18,000, club Rp20,000 and tomato Rp13,000. More substantial menu offerings include Nasi Campur Rp15,000, spring rolls Rp10,000, Nasi or Mei goring Rp15,000 coconut crusted fish and urab Rp23,000 grilled prawns Rp30,000 calamari Rp30,000 mixed salad Rp 10,000, chicken salad Rp 18,000 and green salad Rp12,000.

I ordered the green salad to start followed by a bowl of my local favourite soup soto ayam: chicken, veggies and noodles all in steaming chicken stock with just hint of chili and spices ) The salad was crispy fresh and delicious as was the very generous size bowl of soto ayam. My friend Wayan had the Mie Goreng (spicy fried noodles with veggies and sliced chicken breast) He said they were delicious but needed more chili to satisfy his craving for very hot and spicy food. Our other traveling companion ordered the coconut crusted fish with urab; unfortunately they did not have any fish available at the time ??? So chicken breast was substituted. A little strange when you are only a stones throw from the ocean and 1000’s of fishing boats. Never the less he said it was delicious and he enjoyed it immensely. Fresh ingredients, freshly prepared as you order is very much a feature of Wayans Warung. There is good range of beers, soft drinks, mineral waters, coffee, tea and another one my favourites, hot ginger tea. Also a very clean Balinese style toilet with soap and hand washing facilities. We recommend this very relaxed and friendly Warung for an excellent light luncheon or snack stop when you visit the Amed region.
