The Jazz café in Ubud offers a range of dining
options. The main dining area allows you to watch close
up the live Jazz band that plays most nights. The walls
are adorned with photographs of some of the great Jazz musicians
from both the past and modern day.
If you are after a quieter or more romantic option then
ask for a table out in the garden, the tables are housed
under thatched roof shelters with the option of Japanese
style dining with floor cushions and low tables or full
size tables and chairs for those of us who are not as supple
as we once were.
The gardens are full of fragrant frangipani plants , tall
towering trees and palms with candles strategically placed
to create a very inviting and relaxing atmosphere. Even
the toilets rate a mention, it is not very often I say that
they are a must see, but the toilets at Jazz café
are just immaculate. The ladies cubicle even features a
potted palm tree; the hand washing basins are located separately
and have hand soap, towels and fresh flowers.
The tables are set with cane placemats and white linen
napkins, the service is fast and efficient and the staff
very knowledge of the menu items.
Only draught beer is available this is served by the mug
Rp.14,500 or jug Rp.68,000
There is also a good range of coolers including Papaya and
Lime for Rp.23,500, or Pasionfruit for Rp.23,500 a good
range of wine tea and coffee is also on offer.
Now to the food , the menu is vast for starters some of
the offerings are Soup of the day for Rp22,000, crispy tofu
tempura on salad with roasted peanut and soy dressing Rp
22,000, warm goats cheese salad drizzled with a roasted
garlic garlic dressing Rp.36,000 Crispy Spring rolls with
sweet chilli dip Rp.29,000, Jazz café Caesar salad
Rp.32,000
Main courses include Super noodle soup with tengiri fish
balls, quail eggs and Asian greens Rp.39,000. Seafood coconut
and lemongrass curry Rp.54,000 Spicy Szechwan BBQ chicken
with aromatic spiced rice and grilled vegetable salad Rp.47,000.
Grilled Australian Sirloin steak with sambal butter, potato
wedges and salad Rp.73,000. Fettuccine pasta with smoked
marlin and cream sauce, goat’s cheese, sun dried tomato
and roasted garlic pizza Rp.45,000. Our vegetarian guest
ordered the vegetable and tofu curry Rp.39,000 and rated
this as one of the best ever, another guest had the Thai
BBQ river prawns with ginger rice and bok choy Rp.58,000,
while I enjoyed the Chicken breast with yellow curry sauce
Rp. 47,000. All were of a very high standard both in presentation
and flavor. Be warned the serves are large so do not fill
up to much on your entrees.
From the range of very delicious desserts we sampled the
Wicked Chocolate truffle cake with coconut cream and chocolate
sauce Rp.22,000 and a ginger and orange cream Brulee also
Rp.22,000. Prices are subject to 16% tax. There is a free
pick up from within the Ubud area but very strangely no
return transport back to your hotel, you will need to negotiate
this with one of the drivers outside the restaurant.
