months restaurant review
A visit to Jimbaran Bay for a meal of fresh seafood is almost
compulsory when holidaying in Bali. We have dined at Jimbaran
Bay many times during stays in Bali but had not visited Sharkeys
until it was recommended to us by one of the staff from the
hotel that we were staying at.
Sharkeys had been highly praised by other guests staying
at the hotel and the restaurant offered the added bonus of
transport to and from your hotel. Our group of 5 diners included
one of Western Australia’s top fishing experts who was
very keen to see the variety of seafood available in Bali.
To say the least by the end of the evening he was more than
impressed by the selection and freshness of the seafood on
offer at Sharkeys.
Our driver picked us up for the 20 minute drive from Kuta
to Jimbaran Bay and we arrived just in time to see the magnificent
sunset over the ocean. The tables and chairs at Jimbaran Bay
are set out on the beach sand. There are not a lot of restaurants
where you wiggle your toes in the sand and enjoy the cool
evening breeze straight off the ocean while feasting on freshly
cooked seafood.
Atmosphere is one of the reasons Jimbaran Bay is so popular
with visitors to Bali. The waves gently rolling into shore
, the planes landing and taking off from the near by Ngurah
Rai airport, the local children down on the shore playing
in the surf, even a strolling Mariachi band to entertain you
and of course the inevitable Hawkers.
The Hawkers are kept at bay from the restaurants so they
do not interfere with your dining experience unless you decide
to leave the sanctuary of the restaurant and venture down
to the beach front to haggle for a bargain or two between
courses.
The seafood is displayed on ice in large trays or you can
select live seafood, should you prefer, from the holding tanks.
Our fishing expert guest selected a small mouth Nanagi, some
medium size prawns and whole squid. You pay by weight, our
Nanagi was 1.4kg @ Rp.70,000 per kilo so a total of Rp.98,000
(about $14.00 AUD). Prawns Rp.130,000 ($18.50AUD ) Squid Rp.70,000
($10.00 AUD )
The seafood is cleaned and then lightly brushed with a mild
chilli and garlic coating, then cooked on giant coconut husk
fueled BBQS as you watch. Complimentary wilted spinach greens,
steamed rice, a cucumber and tomato sambal, chilli and garlic
butter sauces are all served with your meal. Also complimentary
platters of fresh Pineapple, Watermelon and Papaya for dessert.
The entire meal, service and setting was just brilliant,
the seafood was cooked to perfection and the accompaniments
delicious.
Beverages include a range of local beers large Bintang Rp.18,000,
large Anker Rp.16,000 fresh fruit juices Rp.9,000. Cocktails
and selected wine is available.
Our entire meal including beer, soft drink, fruit juices,
came to Rp.444,500 (about $63.50 AUD for 5 people $12.70 AUD
per person) In summary, a great night and excellent value
when you consider the transport is also included as complimentary.
