Warung Hokkian
Address: Jalan Raya, Ubud
|
Heading east just past Jalan Hanoman in central Ubud you
will discover some of the cheapest but most delicious Chinese
food available in Bali.
Forget the ambience—there is none. Plastic chairs,
wooden tables, concrete floors and only desk fans to keep
you cool, forget it all, the food more than makes up for
the décor.
Two huge cast iron woks are located on the edge of the
busy road. Nothing is pre-prepared. It is all cooked in
front of you. Service is super fast and very friendly. A
small bottle of local Bintang beer (Rp 8000) is served icy
cold and a good range of fruit juices, soft drinks and mineral
waters are also available. This local warung serves only
Chinese food and the menu has around 15 choices. It is always
busy with the locals calling in for lunch or dinner, not
too many tourists have yet discovered this gem. Be warned
if they ask you if you want your meal spicy it means ……
HOT …. Best ask for medium. Nearly every thing on
the menu is Rp 10,000. Cap Cay Goreng is mixed vegetables
fried in the hot wok with chicken or beef .. it is excellent
as is the Mie Goreng and the Lomi which is Chinese noodles
with gravy, chicken, beef and fresh vegetables. Bihun Cupeng
with rice noodles is also delicious. The Koloke ayam or
chicken with sweet and sour sauce and special Chinese spices
is a little more expensive at Rp 15,000 but well worth the
extra few rupiah. Do not miss their special fried rice at
only Rp 8,000 with one serve more than enough for 2 people.
The portions at Warung Hokkian are very generous in fact
huge. We thoughly recommend this warung as an out standing
value for money dining experience if good food is more important
to you than good décor.
