We had this restaurant recommended to us by our friend Sonia who is a Lovina based fine jewelry designer. We had driven from Ubud via Kitamani and across the mountains to Bedugal then to the hot springs at Banjar finally arriving in Lovina around 6.00pm. So by the time we checked into our hotel and had a quick freshen up we were very ready for a good meal and a few relaxing drinks.
Kwizien is beautifully appointed with great ambience, comfortable rattan chairs, mood lighting and gentle classical music. The menu is French inspired the, walls display good quality local art that is also for sale. The setting is open plan with gentle ceiling fans to move the cool night air round. In a word I would describe the setting as "Romantic".
The range of beverages is vast with spirits starting at Rp. 40,000 Cocktails from
Rp. 45,000. Beers included Bintang, Carlsberg, San Miguel and Heineken. An impressive range of local and imported wines including Stonehaven Chardonnay from South Australia Rp. 145,000, Omni Sparkling Rp. 235,000 and Nottage Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Rp. 230,000. Robert Mondarvi Woodbridge White Zinfandel from California Rp. 265,000, Mad Fish Premium red from Margaret River in Western Australia
Rp. 370,000. The range of wines available is vast and diverse, Kwizien even have house wines (Lindermans red or white) available by the glass Rp. 25,000 half litre Rp. 80,000 or one litre Rp. 150,000.
The menu most certainly takes its inspiration from the kitchens of France. Soups on offer included Creamy Tomato Rp.19,000 or Traditional French Onion Rp.20,000. Entrees included a few very interesting sounding offerings which I have not seen before in Balinese restaurants: Goat Cheese Piperade (Wholemeal toast topped with marinated capsicum and goat cheese finished with grilled sesame seeds, Borneo honey, crudités and orange garnish) YUM ! Grilled Prawns Diabolique (grilled prawns in their shells on a creamy capsicum and brandy sauce served with a warm bread roll on the side Rp. 38,000. Amongst other offering were yellow fin tuna spring rolls, Italian salad, Greek salad and smoked salmon.
The choice of main course dishes has something to satisfy even the most discerning of diners. A range of pasta dishes including Pasta Promodoro with a creamy basil and tomato sauce Rp. 27,000 , Pasta Carbonara with a creamy sauce with sautéed onion rings, ham, bacon and mushrooms, and the old favourite Pasta Bolognese. All pasta dishes offer the choice of either spaghetti or fettuccine.
The long list of mains course dishes feature Carbonades a la flamande, tender beef cubes slowly cooked in black beer, mustard and onions. My dining companion choose this for his main course and was very impressed with the flavours and presentation even if the portion size was a little on the small side. Grilled chicken breast Provencale Rp. 46,000, grilled butterfish a l estragon Rp. 48,000. I selected the Chicken Cordon bleu which was a very tender chicken breast, stuffed with ham and cheese served with a rich and creamy mushroom sauce, totally delicious !! Our main course dishes came with French fries and a very crispy and well dressed mixed side salad. A large selection of Indonesian mains are also available including Nasi Goreng Ayam Rp. 24,000, Cap Cay Tahu Rp. 24,000 Rendang Sapi Rp. 44,000 .
The desserts and coffee list is also excellent. Crepe Suzette Rp. 28,000 an interesting range of Coupes Rp. 24,000 - Rp 28,000 and a very delicious chocolate delight which was a homemade chocolate cake soaked in brown rum, stuffed with whipped cream topped with chocolate flakes and icing sugar. Just to finish off a night of indulgence I suggest you try one of the special coffees. Irish coffee made with Jamiesons Irish whiskey, Café Parisien with Grand Marnier or the delightful sounding Italian coffee with Amaretto di Saonno. In summary we decided Kwizien was a very enjoyable experience, good food, and good wine and good service all in a beautiful and tranquil setting.
